Historic Precedent Study
Yerba Buena Lofts
Yerba Buena Lofts is an apartment complex built in San Francisco in 2002
Architect: Stanley Saitowitz
Client: Yerba Buena Lofts
About: Beman was commissioned by George Pullman in 1879 to design the planned industrial community, which included more than 1,300 houses, a factory, and other public buildings. He was assisted by landscape architect Nathan F. Barrett.

- Yerba Buena Lofts is notable for its boxy design and use of glass and concrete exterior. Each home maximizes natural light and has its own loft and balcony, which plays into its exterior design

- Saitowitz treats the building almost like an abstracted city block: a vertical structural grid is “extruded” to create a field of repeatable loft “lots.” The massing emphasizes a long, rectilinear urban wall along Folsom, with the Shipley side stepped back — producing a monumental, repetitive street presence that reads as both an urban facade and a series of individual dwellings.

Site Analysis

Choice of Site:
This site was chosen for the proposed apartment complex due to its location between two important landmarks. Specifically, it is near the town of Santa Fe and the nearby ski mountain, Ski Santa Fe. It would likely attract income based on its convenient location.
