Literal Analogy (Iconic) & Environmental Relationship (Sun Angles)
The inspiration that was chosen for this proposed design is the propellor of an aircraft​. The main wing of the proposed addition is attached through the main hierarchy original building.
As a result, the heuristic of this design falls under a literal analogy. Secondarily, another heuristic is environmental relations. The entire addition is oriented towards the sun to maximize solar gain and sunlight.

The main idea and heuristic for the second proposal is environmental relations. The proposed addition is oriented towards the sun. The common areas use curved windows to follow the path of the sun and solar panels are used to maximize solar gain.

Formal "Language"
For the third preliminary design, the heuristic chosen follows a formal language, specifically Meier's style of architecture. The curved walls highlight the communal area and the apartments follow a grid-like pattern.
